Maintaining and cleaning your tools and equipment is essential for achieving high-quality resin bound surfaces. A well-maintained forced action mixer, paddle mixer and installation tools like trowels will ensure the efficiency and extend the lifespan of your equipment.

Our guide walks you through the best practices for cleaning and maintaining your equipment during and after each of your resin bound installations.

Cleaning a Forced Action Mixer

Cleaning your forced action mixer after every use is essential to keeping it running smoothly. It’s also recommended to clean the mixer between resin bound mixes to prevent any build-up of resin that might harden and stick to the equipment. Here’s a simple step-by-step process to clean your mixer effectively:

Prepare the mixer for cleaning:

  1. Ensure the discharge chute is free of debris before starting.
  2. Remove the mixer head and paddles so they can be cleaned separately.

Clean the interior of the mixer:

  1. Start your mixer and add in 1–2 bags of dry aggregate to agitate and loosen the resin.
  2. Add white spirit or xylene to help dissolve any residual resin.
  3. Release the aggregate into a bucket or wheelbarrow and dispose of it responsibly.
  4. Use a wire brush and white spirit or xylene to clean the paddles, pan, and mixer gate.
  5. For any remaining cured resin, apply a heat source using a hot-air gun or blowtorch to soften the resin before scraping it away with a wallpaper scraper. Be careful not to apply direct heat to one area for a prolonged period as this may cause parts such as wiring insulation and plastic to melt.

Clean the exterior (optional):

  • Wipe down the outside of the mixer to remove resin splashes and dirt.

Safety Tips to Keep in Mind:

  • Ensure cleaning is carried out in well-ventilated area and appropriate PPE is worn.
  • Avoid letting water from reaching any of your electrical components.
  • Clean the mixer gate after every project to prevent jamming. Use a soft brush and white spirit for best results.
  • If the mixer gate does get stuck, heat it gently with heat to loosen any hardened resin.

Cleaning Your Paddle Mixer

Paddle mixers are equally important to maintain. If left dirty, resin residue can harden and affect performance, failure to correctly mix your binder could lead to issues with the surface so be sure to keep your paddle mixer in the best condition possible.

To clean your paddle mixer:

  1. After every job, place the whisk in a bucket of dry aggregate to loosen the residue.
  2. Add white spirit or xylene to the aggregate and continue mixing for thorough cleaning.
  3. Wipe or scrape and remaining residue.
  4. Let the paddle whisk air dry completely before storage.

Maintaining Trowels, Spazzles and Other Tools

Well-maintained hand tools are key to achieving a smooth and professional finish. Proper cleaning and lubrication will help you avoid imperfections caused by damaged or dirty tools.

During Installation:

  • Use a trowel cleaner such as Glide & Shine to keep your tools lubricated and clean throughout the installation process.
  • If you find any build-up of resin on your tools during installation, be sure to remove this with a cleaning agent and scraping tool.

After Each Project:

  • Remove any resin residue with white spirit or xylene.
  • Allow tools to air dry before storing them.
  • For persistent cured resin, apply light heat with a hot-air gun or blowtorch, then carefully scrape off the softened resin. Be mindful not to overheat and damage the tools.

Why Cleaning and Maintenance Matters

Neglecting your tools and equipment can lead to reduced efficiency, shorter equipment lifespans, and uneven resin bound surfaces. By incorporating proper cleaning and maintenance into your workflow, you not only protect your investment in your tools but also ensure consistent, high-quality results on every project.
