Learning With PERMABOUND

At PERMABOUND, our one day training sessions are designed to give every attendee, whether a seasoned installer or a confident DIYer, the knowledge and practical skills they need to begin installing resin bound surfaces with confidence. One of our recent graduates, Jamie, is a perfect example of how with the right training, the right materials and a passion for a project, can lead to outstanding results.

Jamie attended one of our training days held at our stockist, GCL Products in Chesterfield, joining other attendees for a full day covering everything from surface preparation to potential pitfalls to getting hands on experience with PERMABOUND materials. Our training doesn’t just cover the “how”, we explain the “why” behind each step, providing attendees with a thorough understanding of the materials before showing and teaching them the techniques required to achieve a high-quality and long-lasting resin bound finish.

For Jamie, this meant taking the skills he’d learned in our training room straight into his own garden project.

Installation Process

Back at home, Jamie set to work on his new garden patio with confidence. Using the knowledge gained in the classroom and during the hands-on session, he carefully followed each step to ensure a professional finish.

With his new skills and experience, Jamie began his PERMABOUND project by creating a strong and stable sub-base foundation. His build-up featured Bullbase and the MeshAndGo triple-layer fibreglass grid system, delivering the strength and permeability essential for long-term performance. Getting this stage right is vital: without the correct build-up, resin bound surfaces can fail.

With the base prepared, Jamie moved on to laying his PERMABOUND surface, starting with the mixing process. Drawing on what he had learned during training, he combined the Cirrus blend aggregates with the resin binder in the correct ratios and mixed for the right amount of time, ensuring a consistent and workable material. The practical session had given him the confidence to handle this stage precisely, avoiding common pitfalls such as inconsistent mixing times or under/over-mixing.

Once mixed, Jamie began trowelling the resin bound material onto the prepared base. Working methodically, he maintained an even thickness and smooth, seamless finish across the patio. He repeated this process of mixing and trowelling until his PERMABOUND surface was complete. The result is a stunning patio that not only looks exceptional but also performs exactly as it should – fully permeable, low maintenance and built to last.

Challenges and Solutions

While Jamie was confident in his DIY abilities, working with resin bound materials was still a new experience. He credits PERMABOUND training with giving him the knowledge and practical skills to overcome potential challenges such as keeping equipment clean between mixes to avoid delays, managing curing times in warmer weather and maintaining a consistent thickness and finish across the whole patio.

By staying organised and following the step-by-step methods taught during training, Jamie was able to apply these techniques effectively and deliver an outstanding patio for his home!

Conclusion

Jamie’s new resin bound patio is not only a fantastic addition to his garden, but also a clear testament to the value of proper training delivered by PERMABOUND. By investing just one day in learning, he was able to approach a specialist surface with the confidence of a professional and achieve a result that is both beautiful and built to last.
